Your customer opens the box and finds a brick where the smartphone should be, or the perfume is gone and the carton has been neatly resealed. For an online store, that's more than a lost item. You face a refund or reshipment, a dispute with the carrier, and a customer who may not order again. The worst part is that you usually can't prove where the parcel was opened, because standard plastic packing tape can be peeled off and stuck back down with almost no trace.

No packaging makes a parcel impossible to open. What you can do is make any opening immediately visible. That makes tampering risky for whoever attempts it and gives you and your customer clear evidence if it happens. This guide explains which materials do that, how they compare, and how to seal a carton properly.

Why standard packing tape doesn't stop tampering

Polypropylene (BOPP) packing tape only sits on the surface of the carton, held by a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It can be lifted with a fingernail, softened with a hair dryer or simply slit along the seam. The box is then resealed with a fresh strip of identical clear or brown tape. Nobody in the warehouse or at the depot will notice, and the recipient just sees a taped box.

Other weak points:

  • Reused cartons already covered in old tape marks, where new signs of opening simply blend in.
  • Empty space inside. If the product moves around, a swap is harder to spot, even by weight.
  • Generic tape. If you use the same tape as everyone else, anyone can "restore" your packaging.

How water-activated tamper-evident tape works

Tamper-evident kraft tape is a paper tape coated with a plant-starch adhesive that is activated with water. Once moistened, the adhesive penetrates the surface of the corrugated board and bonds with the carton fibres. The tape can be torn or cut, but it cannot be removed without leaving visible damage: the top layer of the board comes away with it and leaves ragged edges. That's why water-activated tape (WAT, also called gummed tape) is widely used wherever you need to see whether a box has been opened.

What makes Viskom's security tape different

  • Reinforcement. The tape has embedded threads, so it's harder to tear and holds the weight of the box.
  • Printed warning. For international shipments, the "WARNING" and "SECURITY" versions are the obvious choice. Versions with Ukrainian text are also available. A printed warning tells everyone who handles the parcel that the packaging is controlled, and it can't be faked with ordinary tape.
  • Specification. 60 mm wide, 50 m per roll, 60 g/m² kraft paper, operating temperature from −20 °C to +60 °C. The minimum order is one roll, so you can test it on a few shipments first.

Example: reinforced water-activated security tape, 60 mm × 50 m.

Without a print: reinforced gummed tape

If you don't need a warning on the box but still want a strong, tamper-evident seal, use plain reinforced water-activated tape such as Stabil 60 mm × 200 m. It works the same way: the adhesive bonds with the board and the threads add strength. The only difference is that there's no warning print.

Custom-printed tape: security and branding in one

The strongest defence against resealing is tape nobody else has. Viskom prints reinforced water-activated tape (60 mm × 50 m) with your logo, with a minimum order of 10 rolls for a custom design. Send your logo and a short brief to info@viskom.com.ua for a quote. Once your customers know what your tape looks like, a box sealed with anything else is a clear signal to inspect it on delivery.

Tamper-evident mailer bags for clothing and documents

Not everything needs a box. Clothing, textiles, documents and soft accessories ship better in courier mailer bags. Viskom's courier bags are made of multi-layer polyethylene (55 µm), with a self-seal flap that can't be reopened without visibly damaging the bag, and some models have a clear document pocket. Sizes range from 130 × 190 mm (A6) to 250 × 360 mm plus a 40 mm flap, in packs of 100. Ask our team about availability for your market.

Comparison: ways to secure a parcel

Closure methodIs opening visible? Can it be resealed unnoticed?Best for
Standard plastic (BOPP) tapeBarelyYes, with the same tapeLow-value, low-risk goods
Self-adhesive paper tapeBetter than plastic, as the paper tearsPartlyEco packaging for light parcels
Water-activated paper tape (non-reinforced)Yes: the adhesive bonds with the boardDifficult, leaves torn fibresLight to medium cartons
Reinforced water-activated tapeYesDifficultHeavier cartons, B2B shipments
Reinforced WAT with printed warningYes, and the warning is visible at a glanceVery difficult, needs identical tapeElectronics, fragrances, high-value goods

VOID security tape (plastic)Yes: leaves a "VOID/OPENED" mark when peeledNoHigh-value items; plastic, not recycled with the carton

Viskom stocks the paper-based options above and courier bags; plastic VOID tape is listed for comparison only. An advantage of paper water-activated tape is that, according to the product specification, it has no polyethylene layer and can be recycled with the carton.

Step by step: sealing a box so any opening shows

  1. Use a new or undamaged carton with no old tape strips, damp patches or tears.
  2. Fill all empty space. The product shouldn't move. Box fillers protect against impacts and make a swap harder to hide.
  3. Moisten the tape evenly across its full width. Dry patches are weak points, and too much water is wasteful.
  4. Seal every seam: the centre seam top and bottom, plus the edge seams of the flaps. Heavier boxes get an H-pattern seal.
  5. Press the tape down along its full length and give the adhesive a few minutes to set before stacking.
  6. Photograph the sealed parcel with the print or logo visible before it leaves.
  7. Tell your customer in the shipping notification: "Your parcel is sealed with our branded tape. Please check it is intact on delivery."

How to apply it: sponge, manual dispenser or automatic machine

For a handful of parcels a day, a damp sponge or brush is enough. At higher volumes, a water-activated tape dispenser is much faster:

  • MiniTaper manual tabletop dispenser: compact, with a water tank, for tape up to 80 mm wide. Note that it is not suitable for reinforced tape, so it won't work with the security tape. Use it with standard non-reinforced gummed tape.
  • Mechanical dispensers deliver an adjustable length of tape with a pull of the lever.
  • Automatic dispensers such as the Alpha X1-400 measure, moisten and cut the tape at the press of a button. They handle papers from 40 g/m² up to reinforced tapes, 50–80 mm wide, on 230 V. This is the choice for warehouses with high volumes, including security tape.

Which setup suits your business?

  • Electronics and gadgets carry the highest swap risk: carton, void fill, and "SECURITY" or "WARNING" tape. Move to custom logo tape as volume grows.
  • Fragrances and cosmetics: high value in a small item. Use security tape on every seam and tight void fill.
  • Apparel: a tamper-evident mailer bag. Branded boxes can be sealed with logo tape.
  • B2B, spare parts, documents: reinforced gummed tape or security tape, and a mailer with a document pocket.
  • Etsy-style handmade and gifts: logo tape protects the parcel and improves the unboxing at the same time.

Common mistakes that make tamper evidence useless

  • The tape wasn't moistened enough, so an edge can be lifted.
  • Only the centre seam was sealed, so small items can be pulled out through the flap edges.
  • Plastic tape went over the security tape and hid the print. Put shipping labels next to it, not on top.
  • It was applied to glossy, laminated or dusty board, where the bond is weaker. Test it on your cartons first.
  • The customer doesn't know what your packaging should look like, so they won't notice foreign tape.

What to do if a parcel was opened anyway

Good packaging helps you show the parcel left your warehouse intact. Ask customers to inspect parcels on delivery. If the tape is damaged, torn unevenly, covered with different tape or the printed warning is broken, they should report it to the courier straight away and record it with photos. Claims procedures differ between carriers and marketplaces, so check your carrier's terms. Your pre-dispatch photos and the recorded parcel weight will support the claim.

FAQ

Does tamper-evident tape guarantee a parcel won't be opened?

No packaging can guarantee that. Tamper-evident tape makes opening obvious: it can't be removed without visible damage, and a printed warning deters opportunistic theft. What matters is that tampering becomes visible.

What is the difference between security tape and standard water-activated tape?

Both use a starch adhesive that is activated with water and bonds with the carton. Viskom's security tape is also reinforced with threads and carries a printed warning such as "WARNING" or "SECURITY", which can't be imitated with ordinary tape.

Can I apply security tape without a dispenser?

Yes, moisten it with a sponge or brush and apply it straight away. The MiniTaper manual dispenser does not take reinforced tape, so for high volumes of security tape use a mechanical or automatic dispenser such as the Alpha X1-400, which handles reinforced tapes.

Does water-activated tape work in cold conditions?

The security tape's operating range is −20 °C to +60 °C. For cold warehouses, automatic dispensers with water heating help the adhesive activate properly.

What is the minimum order for custom-printed tape?

For reinforced water-activated tape, 60 mm × 50 m, with your own design, the minimum order is 10 rolls. Email your logo and requirements to info@viskom.com.ua for a quote.

Box with security tape or a mailer bag for clothing?

For soft goods, a courier mailer with a tamper-evident self-seal flap is usually more practical: it can't be reopened unnoticed and the parcel is lighter. Choose a carton with security tape for fragile or high-value items.
